Overwatch Has Made Me Love Multiplayer Again

With all of that gushing out of the way, I’d like to pinpoint the exact moment where I realized that Overwatch was a special experience, at least for me. While the PC audience is far more knowledgeable about team composition than its console counterparts (as a result of sheer time played), I found myself on a team where the other five players thought it would be a good idea to choose three Tracers and two Reapers. If you don’t know anything about Overwatch, you should know that a balanced team consisting of offense, defense, tanks and supports is going to succeed far more often than one where every player is in one category. Considering that Tracer is the squishiest offensive hero and Reaper is an offensive character that isn’t going to be able to do damage at range, I found myself at a loss. Generally when I’m attacking a central control point, I enjoy picking someone like Junkrat, whose bouncing grenades can cause absolute chaos. Unfortunately, this hero was out of the question, as my more casual teammates would not be able to succeed without a healer. It’s for that very reason that I chose Mercy, who can beam health into any allies that she aims her staff at.

The thing is, playing nearly one-thousand hours of Modern Warfare 2 during my freshman year of college (sorry mom) burned me out on multiplayer games for a long time. Make no mistake, I’ve loved a great deal of multiplayer games over the years, but they always seem to either only stick with me during the first couple of weeks or fade out of my consciousness after I submit a review. Granted, this is partially due to the perils of being a multi-platform gamer with single-platform friends, yet there hasn’t really been a multiplayer game since 2009 that has burrowed into my brain quite like Infinity Ward’s last great game.

There have been recent attempts by some studios to permeate some raw idea of ‘satire’ to be the glue that binds a game together. But the problem with this strict reliance, is the fact this is simply a ham-fisted and superficial perception of satire for the pure sake of it . That something is satirical, if it merely says it is; that the main objective in promoting your game in a trailer, is to simply shove humour in one’s face — to paint it in a kind of overly-confident, overly-exuberant fashion. Doing so will only bring about one of the most unrequested anecdotes of feedback from your typical viewer: try-hard. Could this be why so many of Microsoft’s past E3’s have been “funny” when (and only when) they weren’t intending to be? To avoid going off-topic, the point is, satire stems from understanding the rules and laws of an established concept…and then looking at it from a sarcastic, ironic or equally-critical viewpoint that’s not so much about exploiting possible flaws, but drawing on the potential disbelief. Because after all…games aren’t real (least not with VR in its current infancy) and while you may want to rely on realism or emotion or established formulae for certain genres – fantasy, for example – everything…and I mean everything…is a target for ridicule and intimidation. Why? Because comedy and laughter are both fundamental states of mood.

Overwatch stadium Roadmap is one of the year’s most-hyped games, and not just because of promising first impressions and its impressive pedigree. Since the game’s reveal in 2014, Blizzard has periodically released trailers , comics , and video shorts that give glimpses into a world torn apart by a cataclysmic war, a new civil rights movement, and clashes between governments, corporate interests, and militias. The story of Overwatch’s creation as a peacekeeping force, its fall from grace, and newfound resurgence in a world that needs it more than ever is far more in-depth than one would expect from a multiplayer shooter. Blizzard Entertainment shocked the industry back in 2014 when it announced that its next MMO, Titan, was canceled and that they would instead be developing a brand new IP in a genre they had never developed for. That game is Overwatch, a team-based multiplayer-only first-person shooter. Overwatch stands out as not only Blizzard’s first foray into the first-person shooter market, but also as Blizzard’s first brand new IP in over seventeen years. Has Blizzard crafted a masterful entry into the genre, or is this one giant mistake?

One of the more unfortunate things about multiplayer games this generation is that a lot of them seem to have their moment in the sun before fizzling out. What do you think it is about Overwatch that will prevent it from being the latest game to fall into this trend? From a design perspective, what is going to make you more like a Team Fortress 2 than an Evolve ?

There are many superficial similarities between Overwatch and Battleborn , Gearbox’s character-based shooter released just a few weeks before Blizzard’s: both feature large rosters of cartoonish, over-the-top characters, and both are multiplayer-focused games with an emphasis on teamwork and roles. But there are significant differences between the two games that actually make the comparisons a little unfair. For starters, Battleborn does have some single-player offerings, but its main differentiator is in its inspiration. From the structure of its maps to the low-ranked AI units serving as cannon fodder to the way players slowly level up over the course of a match, Battleborn is clearly trying to blend first-person gameplay with frantic MOBA elements perfected in games like League of Legends . Overwatch is far more similar to Valve’s legendary class-based shooter Team Fortress 2 . It takes that game’s concepts (learning a class, wildly differing roles based on attacking, defending, and support, and changing roles constantly to adapt to new situations) and cranks them up to eleven, as more characters means more slight tweaks on the same central ida helmet with a gold and black design on it
